Woman Holding Book

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (MARCH 2024)—Recently, Lawrence Primary School embraced the nationally known event Read Across America Week by inviting community members to share their love of reading with LPS children. Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to engage with various professionals who highlighted the importance of reading—both in their lives and throughout their careers.

First grade students listened to a veterinarian read How to Catch a Class Pet by Alice Walstead, while second graders enjoyed a reading of Peggy Rathmann’s Officer Buckle and Gloria, read by a Nassau County police officer. The third-grade students were captivated by an Inwood firefighter who read Pete the Cat: Firefighter Pete by James Dean.

In addition to these engaging readings, author Patty Labriola joined the students for an interactive assembly. Ms. Labriola shared insights into the background of her book The Yawn That Went Around the World and discussed the process of writing and illustrating. Her book tells a story of how in one pivotal moment, a young girl sends a yawn out on an adventure around the world. Her yawn returns to teach her what a big difference one little person can make with just one small action. In addition, Lawrence Primary School’s PTA purchased a copy of the book that will be available for each of their classrooms.

Read Across America Week at Lawrence Primary School was a huge success, fostering a love of reading and learning among students with the support of the local community.
