LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (MARCH 2023)—Lawrence pre-kindergarten and primary students celebrated Read Across America Week with various activities that incorporated books by Dr. Seuss and promoted a love for reading. Read Across America Week is celebrated annually in March by the National Education Association to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday and to encourage reading.
Lawrence Primary School students read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and participated in a STEAM activity in which they practiced their engineering skills to build Truffula trees using different building materials. The students also colored in paper Dr. Seuss hats and wrote down rhyming words.
Pre-kindergarten students celebrated Read Across America by participating in Author Spotlight Spirit Week. Each day the pre-k students focused on a different author and coordinated their outfits to represent the story they were reading aloud on that day. Each class participated in different activities such as drawing and creating caterpillar stamp paintings and rainbow fish creations related to the stories they read. Books read during the week included Llama Llama Red Pajamas by Anna Dewdney, The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and Don’t Let the Pigeon Go to School by Mo Willems.
